Koththu Roti, colloquially simply “Koththu”; is a quintessential Sri Lankan street food.  Eating “Koththu” is a multi-sensory experience that is to be enjoyed through sight, smell and sound; resulting in a unique culinary treat. The dish derives its name from the process of how it is made. The Tamil word “Koththu” (also spelled as Kottu and Kothu) means "to chop".

Koththu originated as an easy to make meal made by chopping leftover roti, vegetables and curry together on a flat-top grill. From its origins as a humble street food, it became a popular choice for late night comfort food (or as a hangover specialty). Over the years “Koththu” has made it way even into high end eateries and restaurants as a must have menu item.
